Playground Fun Sept. 5, 2016

NAME: TEACHER:

Problem of the Week (Sept. 5, 2016)
Playground Fun!

Directions: Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper. Label the paper with your FULL name, your teacher, and which problem(s) you are handing in, then staple it to this sheet.

Level 1:
Hopscotch. The game of hopscotch is fun to play. Look for a picture of a typical hopscotch play area. Now you get to design a totally new type of hopscotch. How many numbers will you have? What shape will each section be? How will you arrange each section? Will you add anything else? Draw and decorate your hopscotch play area.

Level 2:
Recess time. There are 18 children in a class and they all like to stay busy at recess. On the playground, 2 children can use each swing (one rides, one pushes), 3 children can use each slide (one going down the slide, one running back to climb the ladder, and one waiting at the top). Draw a combination of swings and slides that allows all the children to play. Can you find more than one combination that works? How many combinations can you find?

Level 3:
Guinea pig fun. A pet guinea pig needs some exercise, so you plan to use some money you saved to buy parts for a guinea pig playground. You can buy ramps, slides, platforms, and exercise wheels. Below is a table showing the price for one of each part. Design and draw a playground for the guinea pig, but you can’t spend more than $30. Show the calculations for exactly how much your playground will cost to build.

Platform
$1.00
Ramp
$2.50
Slide
$3.00
Exercise wheel
$4.00
