Level 1 Cans and boxes:
If your next door neighbor gives you 3 boxes of cereal and 4 cans of tuna fish, and you give 1 box of rice and 5 cans of beans, how many items of food have you collected all together? Bonus challenge: If each box collected weighs 10 ounces and each can collected weighs 14 ounces, how many ounces of food did you collect in the problem above?
Level 2 How much is a ton?:
We are trying to collect more than 7 tons of food. Seven doesn’t sound like very much, but how heavy is a ton? One ton is equal to 2,000 pounds!! So if we collect 7 tons, how many pounds is that? What if we collect 10 tons, how many pounds would that be?
Bonus challenge: Write down your weight in pounds ___________. Now figure out how many clones of you it would take to make a ton! It will take ____________ to make a ton.
